The Pitt Rivers Museum holds world-renowned ethnographic collections and archives, which are frequently accessed by researchers, lecturers and students. We work with Oxford University and other higher education institutions to support access and interpretation of the collections. University courses

The Museum was where university teaching of anthropology began in the UK, in 1884. Our curators continue to contribute innovative teaching to a variety of courses at the University of Oxford and beyond, drawing on the Museum's unique displays and collections.

Online learning

The Pitt Rivers Museum is currently working alongside the University of Oxford's 'Cabinet: Digital Transformations of Teaching through Objects', an award-winning online study and revision platform. Together, the Museum is creating a range of new accessible resources that use our online collections and archives. Students can access further study through a range of interactive platforms.

Tutorial teaching and supervision

Objects and archives are available for use in tutorial sessions to illustrate, provoke and bring tutorial teaching to life. There are a number of smaller spaces in the Museum available for tutorial sessions using the Museum's collections and expertise. Our academic staff also supervise students for their dissertation and thesis research projects, as well as partner with other universities for collaborative doctoral awards.

Seminar teaching

Objects and archives are available for use in the Museum's research room to bring seminar teaching to life, for up to 15 students. Museum staff can help select and advise on the most suitable objects to support specific classes, retrieving them from storage for your session.

Internships

The Museum runs and supports a range of internships for both Oxford and other HEI students in its conservation, collections and public engagement departments. If your HE course supports an internship period and you would like to work at the Museum, get in touch!
